Copy Cat Design: Raul Martins' Library

Here's the lovely and talented Colleen with our next installment of Copy Cat Design. And it's a good one!

This little library by Raul Martins is chock full of great design ideas, so let's get started!

1. Antique Brass Reed Small Chandelier; Bellacor, $420

Replace the shades on this chandelier with black shades, to repeat the black and gold motif.

2. Clear Crystal Ball with Crystal Stand; Crystal Company, $70

A grouping of crystal balls on a bookshelf looks ever so chic.

3. Steel Commercial Shelving Unit; Home Depot, $65

Look closely and you'll notice these shelves are industrial shelving units, topped with a black marble slab. Such an excellent storage solution!

4. "Studies for a Capital" Framed Poster; All Posters, $100

Framed architectural sketches are so fitting for a library. Botanical diagrams would be lovely too.

5. Solid Marble Obelisk; Wayfair, $67

More intriguing objects for a grouping!

6. Klismos Dining Chair in Chocolate; West Elm, $99

I firmly believe a library shouldn't have too-comfy chairs, otherwise you end up snoozing more than reading. It's for your own good!

7. Penguin Classics Fitzgerald Short Stories; Amazon, $16

A book on which to place an obelisk.

8. Odyssey Dining Table; CB2, $199

You could buy a Tulip Table with a black marble top, but I actually prefer the contrast of the white table.

9. Stone Trellis Wallpaper in White and Beige; Decorators Best, $76.75/roll

Here's another brilliant design trick: the wallpaper pattern mimics the one on the rug, but it's low contrast, allowing the rug to take center stage. Repetition: your design friend.

10. Castleberry Area Rug; Home Decorators Collection, $350 for 7'x9'

A high contrast geometric rug punctuates the repetition of black throughout the space.

Copy Cat Design: Caitlin Wilson's Dining Room

Colleen is on fire - I love seeing what she is up to on There Comes A Yes. Also, did you hear that she is now the head graphic designer for Lonny? She is so talented and I feel really lucky that she works with me! She's joining us today with a copy cat version of a room designed by another lovely friend, Caitlin Wilson. Here's Colleen:

I really love Caitlin Wilson's dining room in the July issue of Matchbook. It's a pretty mix of traditional and feminine pieces!

1. Laura Ashley Ava Table Lamp with Taylor Shade; Wayfair, $115

It's pink, but the shape isn't overtly girly, so it works well in a dining room.

2. Cabbage White paint; Farrow & Ball

A fresh, light wash of blue on the walls enhances the navies and pinks.

3. Yellow Dynasty Teapot; The Teapot Shoppe, $35

Chintz makes me happy. That's all.

4. French Empire Crystal Chandelier; Gallery Lighting, $297

A very traditional and formal chandelier--it's best paired with a mix of furniture styles.

5. Porcelain Flower Pot; Oriental Furniture, $39

To stuff with hydrangeas, of course.

6. Lucite Square Knob; The Paris Apartment, $34

Dress up a run-of-the-mill buffet with glam lucite knobs.

7. Liatorp sideboard; Ikea, $350

A basic sideboard perfect for customization.

8. "Bordighera" by Monet in Parma frame 37"x31"; Art.com, $245

Scour church garage sales, thrift stores, and fleas for a framed oil painting--you'll get the best deal!

9. Karges French Regency Dining Table; Ebay, $1595

Rarely can you go wrong with a vintage dining set. If you're searching Ebay or Craigslist, try adding "regency" to your search terms.

10. Chandler Caned High Back Chair; Ballard Designs, $299

To get that Regency look, search for high back chairs and caning.

11. Sofia Fabric in Dark Blue; Ikea, $8/yard

Upholster the dining chairs in a navy and white/cream stripe!

12. Grant Wing Back Chair; Home Decorators, $900

Use wing back chairs as host chairs--it breaks up the matchy-matchy look of a dining set.

13. Navy Fleur Chinoise Fabric; Caitlin Wilson Textiles, $60/yard

Tie the room together perfectly with this floral fabric.

Copy Cat Design: Feminine Bedroom

Colleen, who is offering eDecorating services now (!!), is back for another stunning Copy Cat post. This photo of the Oly Studio showroom at High Point was plastered allllll over Pinterest this week. Wouldn't you love to call this room yours? Here's Colleen:

Here's a showroom that made the rounds after High Point, and for good reason: it's spectacularly pretty! 

1. Sea Urchin Art; Pieces, $28-45

Since our interpretation doesn't include a stunning brass bed, bring in some brass accents for extra sparkle. I love these urchins because the echo the shape of the sunburst mirror in the space.

2. Shane Powers Opal Glass Vase; West Elm, $23

A few coral peonies in this milky-white vase would be plenty pretty on a nightstand.

3. Coral Table Lamp; Wayfair, $95

Coral lamps fit right in with the tropical thrust of the room.

4. Chatham Canopy Bed; PB Teen, $1000

Not quite a showstopping brass canopy, but the lines are clean. Ikea used to carry a similar (and cheaper) canopy, so it might be worth tracking down on Craigslist.

5. Schumacher Velvet in Hibiscus; Decorator's Best, $109

A luxurious velvet for a bolster or euro shams.

6. Bahama Sparrow; Vintage Printable

Illustrations in the public domain are an excellent source for decorating, and this bird print works so well here! You can even enlarge the illustration with Wizard Prints. 

7. Jules Large Accent Table; Crate & Barrel, $350

It's a bit of a challenge finding new gold-toned furniture, so I love these feminine tables.

8. Gold Sunburst Mirror; Target, $90

A spindly starburst mirror adds some needed texture.

9. Lyon Chair; Restoration Hardware, $595

A pretty, cozy chair in a natural linen rounds out the furniture. (ed note: This chairs is super comfy and an unbelievably great price!!)

10. Hemstitched Percale Duvet in Pink Grapefruit; Garnet Hill, $120

Add some color to the bed with a coral pink duvet or quilt!

Copy Cat Design: Chic, Modern Desk

Colleen, who may have suckered me into buying a gingham dress, is back in action today with another killer copy cat post! I loved this room from Adore too! PS Colleen mentions Pinterest in her round up. Thought I would mention she is one of my favorite Pinners around. Follow her here.

I have a confession. I really, really love office supplies. Walking into Container Store makes my knees buckle, and guys, I am not an organized person. So when I saw Claudia Stephenson's Sydney office area in Adore magazine, I was a little smitten. 

1. Veronica Orb Lamp; Vielle + Frances, $240

I love the glass ball lamp in the picture, but I'd settle for a lucite one too. Another option are these mini ball lamps--you get a pair for $220, which is quite the deal!

2. Personalized Neon Pink Pencils; Oriental Trading, $7.50 for 24

In my fantasy life, my pencils all match. The little things.

3. Braided Console Basket; West Elm, $24

We should probably refrain from choosing bright pink for every storage container. Unless this is for a young girl, in which case I suggest you go wild. A simple, natural fiber storage basket adds just enough texture.

4. Figuier Mini Candle; Diptyque, $28

A little luxury for your workspace, that's it!

5. Medium Lacquer Box; Container Store, $13

Stash receipts and other not-so-pretty but necessary things.

6. Orbit Arm Chair; CB2, $130

A little caveat: if you spend a significant amount of time at your desk, definitely invest in something more comfortable than a side chair. But plopping down for a little Pinterest session, I love this chair.

7. Monogram Decorative Plate; C Wonder, $38

A place for the bits and bobs to live, like business cards.

8. Palitlig Vase; Ikea, $2

Resist the temptation to buy a matching desk set and use non-office things, like votive holders, small vases, and drinking glasses, as pencil holders. 

9. Vintage Penguin Book; Etsy, $3.50

I dig the small collection of vintage Penguin editions in the image. Popping into used book stores is one of my favorite things, and you can always find some cool-looking covers.

10. Octagonal Silk Scarf; Kate Spade, $70

Pretty square scarves make excellent art. This office uses a Hermes scarf, but I'm a little partial to this Kate Spade pattern!

11. Braided Jute Rug; Ballard Designs, $340 for 8'x10'

Ground all the color and slickness with a simple jute rug.

12. Jett Desk; Z Gallerie, $500

For an x-desk, I really like this one from Z Gallerie. But if you just want a simple white lacquer desk, nothing much beats the Parsons Desk from West Elm. 

Copy Cat Design: Wallpaper in the Bedroom

Colleen's back at it with another great room, recreated for less! (PS We're getting ready for some trips this summer, and I'm DYING for this orange swim suit Colleen shared this week. So cute!)

This bedroom from Traditional Home is deceptive--at first it looks like it has a lot going on, but with the exception of statement-making wallpaper, it's a very neutral room. Let's take a closer look.

1. Michelle Table Lamp; Macys, $80

The skinny white lamp looks crisp against the cobalt wallpaper.

2. Sweet Pea Posy Vase; Kate Spade, $35

If you're fortunate enough to have a yard, bud vases are your very best friend for decorating. Add a few blooms from your yard and put them in every room.

3. Ninda Upholstered Bed; World Market, $600

This bed is such a find. Going neutral shouldn't mean boring, so pick something with interest, like tufting or a scrolling shape.

4. Laguna Stripe Outdoor Fabric; Fabric Guru. $21/1.7 yards

The original roman shades use a Kravet fabric, but I quite like a wide neutral stripe too.

5. Wallpaper Pattern: SW4PA719; Sherwin Williams, $28/roll

The wallpaper is absolutely the star of the room, and the saturated color is key. This Chinoiserie pattern is an economical alternative to the original Osborne & Little.

6. Patriot Blue; Benjamin Moore

If wallpapering isn't an option, this blue paint will look stunning with white trim.

7. Birkeland Wardrobe; Ikea, $300

Consider replacing the glass doors with mirrors--it's pretty and functional.

8. Cabinet Carat Knob; Anthropologie, $6

Crystal pulls will add a little sparkle to a plain white wardrobe.

9. Greek Key Sham in Blue; Williams-Sonoma Home, $98

The bedding repeats the blue in the embroidery, on otherwise bright white sheets.

10. Parsons End Table; Home Decorators Collection, $99

Just a simple white table for pretty things.

11. Blue and White Ginger Jar; Furbish, $45

I'm a tchotchke person. I need my pointless pretty objects, thus a blue ginger jar.

12. Gillian Pillow; Crate & Barrel, $60

A feminine and neutral pillow completes the bed.

Copy Cat Design: Celerie Kemble Dining Room

I'm so thrilled you guys seem to love these copy cat posts from Colleen as much as I do! Colleen has the best eye and knows when to splurge and when to save. She also is a FANTASTIC flea market partner in crime. We always find gems together. My favorite find was these midcentury chrome and brass coffee tables for Colleen's living room. So gorgeous!!

Here's Colleen with an amazing dining room redux:

I'm so excited to do this reader-requested Celerie Kemble dining room; I worked on the issue of Lonny in which it was featured! It was absolutely my favorite interior.

1. Bowmont Chandelier; Circa Lighting, $1260

If this room were for a client, I'd trawl the flea market and Ebay for a vintage option, but I'm quite enjoying this new chandelier that nods to the original Murano. For a different but still lovely Murano-style look, try the Calais Chandelier from Z Gallerie.

2. Alexa Limed Oak Chair; Zinc Door, $500

Celerie used shagreen chairs of her own design in this room. Grey chairs with Mid-Century lines are still faithful to the look. Another option are these Klismos chairs from West Elm.

3. Java Mohair; Decorator's Best, $50.25/yard

Complete the chairs with plush mohair in a chocolate hue.

4. Bamboo d'Oro Flatware; Barney's, $125

I've been dreaming of this flatware for months now. It's on my "when I'm rich and fabulous" list. Target fortunately has an interpretation in stainless.

5. Lucite Curtan Rod; The Paris Apartment, $255

One of the Jonathan Adler decorating tips I've taken to heart is to replace your hardware with lucite. It's instant glamour!

6. Pinch Pleat Curtains in Sulfur Green Linen; I Dream of Drapery, $138

To keep window treatments from being over the top, pair the lucite rod with linen drapes.

7. Artichoke Candle Holder; Sears, $38

These ceramic artichokes would be cute on a mantel too.

8. Vintage Floral Wallpaper; SecondHand Rose, $150/roll

The art in the room is by Alex Timchula, but framing wallpaper is a great option. You could also get botanical prints from Etsy.

9. Dakota Dining Table; Crate and Barrel, $1400

Most lightly-stained farmhouse tables would do the trick here. Top with simple glass plates.

10. Nautilus Shell Paint; Benjamin Moore

This pale peachy-pink evokes just enough glamour.

11. Torsby Sideboard; Ikea, $300

Spray paint the hardware a brass shade and you'd be good to go! For something a little more Regency, try this buffet from Home Decorator's.

Copy Cat Design: Lilly Bunn Weekes Living Room

It's Friday! My lovely assistant Colleen from There Comes A Yes is joining us for another round of Copy Cat Design. Lilly Bunn Weekes is an amazing NYC designer and just an all-round lovely person! She blogs at Lilly's Notebook. Here's Colleen's twist on her gorgeous work:

I adore Lilly Bunn Weekes' full-on commitment to color. She doesn't mess around. Color on the walls, color on the furniture--this is not wimpy stuff!

1. Purple Ikat Throw Pillow, Zazzle, $68

If you're feeling some trepidation over color or pattern, start with the baby step: a throw pillow. Pillows are gateway decor.

2. Arrowroot in Hyacinth; Decorator's Best, $27.50/roll

Grasscloth is a genius wallcovering. It works wonders for rooms without much architecture, but there's no pattern to potentially get sick of. Perfect!

3. Meurice Square Table Lamp; Jonathan Adler, $325

A nice, simple brass lamp.

4. Quartz Crystal Cluster; Blue Moon Crystals & Jewelry, $20

Another lamp option: get some crystal clusters, a lamp kit, and drill a hole through the clusters to fit a lamp pipe. DIY instructions here.

5. Ektorp Loveseat; Ikea, $379

Ikea to the rescue for this sofa. Bemz has a range of slipcovers for this style, including an orange cotton.

6. Chambord Velvet in Mango; Fabric Guru, $14/yard

Or have the couch upholstered in this lush orange velvet!

7. Ikat Pillow Cover in Pale Plum; Uzbek Alive, $28

More purple ikat!

8. Auberge Chair; Ballard Designs, $649

A bergere ready to be upholstered.

9. Cotton Ikat Fabric; Fabricadabra, $24/yard

Lilly's chairs (and pillows) are done in Madeline Weinrib fabrics, which are spendy. This fabric is a brilliant alternative.

10. Winston Gold Leafed Coffee Table; Worlds Away, $1375

I like that the coffee table is architectural and not overly pretty--a counterpoint to all of the feminine elements.

11. Quatrefoil Mirror; Shades of Light, $329

With a coat of brown-black paint, this mirror is a dead ringer for the inspiration one!

12. Mid-Century Nightstand; West Elm, $249

Simple wood end tables, another smart juxtaposition.

13. Dash and Albert Woven Diamond Rug; Wayfair, $514

A black and white rug for that punch of graphic pattern.

Copy Cat Design: Eclectic Dining Room

This dining room from Elle Decor is one of the first I saved to my computer many moons ago, so I was quite excited when Jenny asked me to break it down for you today!

1. Wire Hare; CB2, $70

This little guy adds just enough humor to a mantel. At 2 feet tall, he's a statement too!

2. Louis XVI Square Back Side Chair; Ballard Designs, $329

Classic Louis chair.

3. Skintex Ostrich in Mustard; Auto Trim Store, $34/yard

Faux ostrich for the dining chairs. Love a leather or faux skin for easy clean up.

4. Vintage Portrait Woman in Red; Ebay, $230

Ebay is a great source for vintage oil paintings, especially quirky portraits like this one. Really dig the shade of her shirt and lipstick too!

5. Embroidered Ikat Stripe Pillow; Urban Outfitters; $34

Urban is so on the ball with trendy and inexpensive home accessories. Perfect way to add a little extra color to your room.

6. Trilight Floor Lamp; White on White, $475

The inspiration room has quite a bit of traditional going on, but breaks up the look with the MCM lamp. It can be hard to find a stylish brass floor lamp new, and under $1000, so I really like this version.

7. Docksta; Ikea, $179

Oh the ubiquitous Docksta. For the price point, its stylings are excellent, and it's not too tiny either at 48 inches wide. Definitely prefer it paired with traditional chairs.

8. Quiet Planes by Tod Seelie 11"x14"; 20x200, $60

Always love a mix of mediums--buy three or four photos and hang them vertically for a similar look.

9. Ginger Jar; Pearl River, $12.50

Pearl River is an excellent source for little doodads if you need to style your room in a hurry.

10. Navy Ikat Pillow; Etsy, $37

Another fun pillow to add to the mix. I'm not the only throw pillow addict, right?

11. Chester Tufted Sofa in Steel Blue; West Elm, $1099

This sofa is an excellent option if you're striking out on Craigslist for the real deal. Plus, it's a lot more apartment-friendly than most chesterfields!
